Important Information
The Pompidou apartment is located just north of the beautiful Seine just a few minutes’ walk from Rambuteau metro station. As the name suggests, it is just a four minute walk to the famous Pompidou Centre. This mammoth gallery houses the largest public collection of modern art in Europe. This distinctive building is known by many as the ‘inside-out building’ thanks to its exterior escalators and brightly coloured tubes and mechanics on the outside. It is the largest museum for modern art in Europe and definitely worth a visit. Named after the 1970s French President Georges Pompidou who commissioned the building and opened in 1977 it has welcomed in excess of 150 million visitors. James Bond fanatics will appreciate the building was used as a filming location in the 1979 film Moonraker where it doubled as parts of arch-villain Hugo Drax’s space station. Outside the centre is the famous Stravinsky Fountain (also called the Fontaine des automates) which features sixteen comical sculptures that move around and spurt water. Designed by artists Jean Tinguely and Niki de Saint-Phalle they represent themes and works by the composer Igor Stravinsky. The fountain was installed in 1983 and is instantly recognized by millions of visitors to the city.
From here travel west and then south, for just ten minutes, through the wonderful Les Halles and you will arrive at the Louvre on the bank of the Seine. Another massive gallery and museum, it is home to the world’s most famous portrait, the Mona Lisa. Join the queue to shuffle past this surprisingly small art work. Decide for yourself if her “enigmatic smile” is worth all the fuss after all.
Head across the water to Ile de Cite, one of two naturally formed islands in the river. Here you will find the stunning architectural gothic masterpiece Notre Dame Cathedral. Marvel at the intricate carvings and scary, though slightly comical, gargoyles on the upper tiers. This is a fully functioning place of worship and is closed during services. If you wish to take a look around inside then be sure to check the website for public opening times to avoid disappointment.
