You will find the Elzevir apartment located o the right bank of the Seine in the 4th arrondissement. Nearby stands the La Place de la Bastille with its huge column and golden angel, the Colonne de Juillet. It marks the site of the infamous prison known as the Bastille which was stormed by the Mob in 1789 at the start of the French Revolution. If you venture down into the subway beneath the square you can actually see the original stones from the Bastille's foundation.

For an interesting afternoon excursion, take the metro south of the Seine and visit the Grande Mosquée de Paris (Great Mosque of Paris). Located in the Latin Quarter at 5th arrondissement, it is the largest mosque in France and also the third largest in Europe. Built in 1926 after World War I the mosque established in gratitude to the Muslim colonies of whom 100,000 died fighting against Germany. During World War II, the mosque played an important part in working as a secret refuge for Jewish children providing them shelter, fake Muslim birth certificates and ultimately safety from the Nazi regime. This stunning white stone building boasts an impressive 33 metre-high minaret. Guided tours are available throughout the day without the need to book in advance however they are in French only. Alternatively you can enjoy a cup of tea and sample eastern sweets and pastries at the café.   The nearest Metro station is Place Monge.
