Condorcet Apartment Paris |
|
The Condorcet apartment is in the north of Paris immediately south of the delightful district of Montmartre. It is actually a hill rising up 130 metres and the summit can be reached via a pretty funicular railway. The start of the railway at the base of the hill can be reached on foot easily from the apartment. At the top you will find the white domed Sacre Coeur Basilica and the view across the city is wonderful. The district is historically famous as an artists’ retreat. Cezanne, Mondrian, Picasso, Van Gogh and many other great painters had their studios here. Montmartre also has a well-established nightlife including the world famous Moulin Rouge ad le Chat Noir. The former is the birth place of the infamous Can-Can and was immortalised by the painter Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec. This Parisian gem has been presenting energetic, extravagant cabaret since 1889. The concept of the shows remains much the same: feathers, sequins, dazzling sets, original music, yet more feathers and of course stunning show-girls. Look out for the famous giant revolving neon windmill and enjoy an exhilarating night.
If you like a bargain and are looking for something unusual to take home as a souvenir of your visit to Paris then why not visit the famous flea market at Porte de Clignancourt at the north base of Montmartre? Known to everyone locally as Les Puces (The Fleas), this fascinating market covers an incredible seven hectares making it the largest antique market in the world. Open at weekends it plays host to up to 180,000 visitors each weekend. Ideally get there in the morning to avoid the huge crowds. Please note that this extremely busy area is notorious for pick-pocketing. Be sensible and leave you passport at the hotel and keep wallets out of sight and always at hand. Alight the metro to Porte de Clignancourt.
The apartment is located within walking distance of Gare du Nord train station which is 400m to the east. This will be very popular with visitors arriving to the city via Eurostar. The nearest metro station is Anvers, just 100m away.
