Established in1804 and now with more than one million residents, it is home to many famous celebrities including Oscar Wilde, Jim Morrison, Marcel Marceau, Edith Piaf and Frédéric Chopin. If you are interested in the history of Paris itself then Père Lachaise is a definite ‘must-see’. The gravesites range from a simple uncomplicated headstone to huge extravagant monuments and even mini chapels. There are other equally beautiful cemeteries worth visiting in the city including Montmartre Cemetery in the north and Montparnasse Cemetery in the south. At the heart of the city, in the shadow of the Eiffel Tower, is the charming Passy Cemetery.
